Aerospace and defence firm Raytheon Technologies is asking schools and cadets in Fife to apply and participate in their STEM Quadcopter challenge.
The challenge has been created to inspire the next generation of STEM learners and drive engagement in science and technology-based subjects and will allow them to design and potentially build their own quadcopter.
Following months of home learning due to coronavirus, the challenge offers young people the chance to experience engineering while giving them access to RTX STEM ambassadors for hands-on support across the country.
Now in its seventh year, the popular challenge is focusing on supporting students to think about their ‘Mission to Mars’. School children aged between 13-14 (S2) will be asked to push the limits on current quadcopter designs.
Pupils will be tasked with thinking of creative ideas which respond to the engineering brief set by the STEM team whilst learning how innovations will help future generations in the exploration of Space.
The competition is running from 23rd March 2021, with entries needing to be submitted by 24th May 2021.
Raytheon says that the successful schools will then be given four weeks to develop build their ideas and will present their final to judges on 22nd June 2021
After a series of regional heats, the UK National Final for this flagship STEM programme will be held virtually and will provide an “exciting day” of competition for all attending participants.
Raytheon says that the winning team will be given a chance to fly their designs “when government and safety guidelines permit them”.

Commenting on the event, James Gray, Managing Director Cyber, Space & Training, Raytheon UK, said: “This month marks a year since the UK went into lockdown. During the last 12 months of school, children’s education has been greatly disrupted.
“The pandemic has shown how crucial science and technology is to our society, from the monumental steps taken in the vaccine development to the shift to remote work.
“Around the globe, countries have made significant advances in Space exploration, focusing our challenge on Space will hopefully inspire and attract students to STEM-based subjects giving us a new generation of STEM leaders and innovators.
“This Quadcopter Challenge gives young people the rare opportunity to test their engineering skills and open the doors to the world of STEM. That’s why we’re inviting Scottish schools to enter our biggest challenge yet.”
