Scottish EDGE Competition Open For Entries
Scottish EDGE, the competition aimed at identifying and supporting Scotland’s entrepreneurs and start-up companies with real high growth potential, has opened entries for it’s next round.
The 11th round of the Scottish EDGE competition has opened. Open to entrepreneurs and companies across Scotland, the competition challenges start-ups to pitch their businesses to a panel of expert judges, in return for funding of up to £150,000.
In the 10 rounds of the competition to date, the EDGE competition has has 2218 applications from companies, of which 245 businesses have received approximately £8 million in funding, creating 818 additional jobs and generating an additional £45.06 million in turnover.
The competition is open to companies in every sector. Previous winners have included business working in food and drink, healthcare, sport, energy, fashion and digital technology.
There are three categories in the EDGE competition:
- The EDGE competition – open to all entrants
- Young EDGE – open to companies where all directors are under the age of 30
- Wild Card EDGE – open to companies which are pre-trading and which display great innovation
- Higgs EDGE – open to companies in science, technology or engineering sectors
The main EDGE competition is open to limited companies only. Since round 10 however, sole traders and partnerships are now eligible to enter the Young EDGE and Wild Card EDGE categories.
Entrants must have been doing business for less than five years. The company must be headquartered in Scotland and at least 50% of the directors must be working in the company on a day-to-day basis. The business should also have the potential to achieve an increase in sales of £200,000 over the next three years.
The Scottish EDGE competition has three assessment stages:
- 1st Stage Assessment of Application and Video Presentation
- Live Semi-Final Presentation (3-min presentation followed by 7-minute Q&A)
- Live Final Presentation (3-min presentation followed by 7-minute Q&A)
Companies wishing to enter the EDGE Competition need to complete an online application and create a 3 x minute pitch video.
The judges in the EDGE competition come from partner organisations including: The Royal Bank of Scotland, Business Gateway, Scottish Enterprise/ Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Prince’s Trust, as well as external business experts, entrepreneurs, and investors from across Scotland. Previous Scottish EDGE winners may also take part as assessors.
Scottish EDGE is also planning to make Round 11 of the competition more appealing by encouraging entrants to capture and share video of their ‘EDGE journey’. The best entry will win a professional 60 second business video, even if they don’t make it to the final round of the competition.
Entries for Scottish EDGE Round 11 are now open. The closing date is 6th September 2017 Application window closes at 14.00 (2.00pm)
