The Data Lab has appointed Brian Hills as Deputy CEO and Head of Service Design as the innovation centre looks to strengthen its executive team.
Hills, who previously served as Head of Data at the organisation, boasts over 22 years’ experience in analytics and software engineering across domains including telecoms, IT and digital.
In his new role, Hills will deputise for CEO Gillian Docherty OBE and lead the scaling of the innovation centre’s impact across Scotland through the growth of existing services.
Having joined in 2015 as a founding member of the leadership team, Hills led the design, launch and growth of The Data Lab’s key services, including the award-winning skills programme and DataFest, the centre’s annual flagship data festival.
Commenting on his promotion, he said: “I believe that how we deliver The Data Lab’s mission is as important as what we deliver. It has been a privilege to lead and collaborate across the team to develop and embed our culture and values in everything we do.
“The team’s investment and commitment to our culture and values has helped us navigate many of the challenges we face with Covid-19, supporting each other and our community as we move forward.”
Prior to joining The Data Lab, Hills held senior analytic and engineering roles with companies including Skyscanner, where he launched and headed up the business intelligence team, as well as Sumerian and Hewlett-Packard.
Hills added: “The Data Lab has so much expertise and potential to offer to Scotland’s data science and AI sector, and as such I am delighted to be taking on the role of Deputy CEO, continuing to work alongside a vibrant and ambitious team who share my enthusiasm for a data-powered future.”

“It is fantastic that Brian is now stepping up from his role as Head of Data to take on the position of Deputy CEO. He is passionate and influential in The Data Lab, and indeed, Scotland’s growing data landscape – and his leadership will be pivotal in driving our ongoing success as we continue to ensure the data science community in Scotland are well served.”
