Dundee Students Create Food Waste Reduction App

Food Waste App

The young innovator hopes to launch an app designed to reduce food waste by listing overstocked items in real time.

Mobile-based app, Foodito was developed by second-year student Donavere Benjamin-Mohan and a team of fellow students from across the UK.

The app informs customers when overstocked items go on sale and could help to reduce food waste. Before the app is launched, however, it faces an online public vote as part of the next step in the global start-up competition.

The 21-year-old will go head to head with 52 other regions in the Global Startup Weekend Sustainable Revolution. Any votes cast prior to Saturday 13th July could help his team to gain a place at the ChangeNow Summit 2020 final which takes place in Paris.


“Supermarkets currently waste around 43 billion pounds worth of food every year, whilst at the same time around 36 million people each year die of starvation. Our app creates a radical, affordable, yet sustainable way of shopping to prevent food waste in supermarkets,” the Benjamin-Mohan explained.

“By giving power back to the customer, we hope to reduce food waste, increase the sale of reduced items and help nurture a viable alternative to having to rely on food banks. By casting your vote we might be able to take our app even further,” he added.

Benjamin-Mohan studies International Relations and Politics at the University of Dundee and is currently completing an internship with the British Council in China. He aspires to advance to the next stage in the competition which could attract investment which would see Foodito become a must-have app.

The seven-strong team behind the Foodito include a Mathematics with Finance student from Queen’s University Belfast, a 3D Design graduate from Robert Gordon University Aberdeen and a Masters Graduate in Geology from the University of Manchester.
