Facebook to Hire 10,000 in EU to Build Metaverse
The social media giant is a step closer to realising its online world for gaming, working and communicating.
Facebook will hire 10,000 “highly-skilled” roles in the EU over the next five years as plans to create its so-called Metaverse ramp up.
The social media giant has big ambitions for its future in the virtual reality space. In September, it committed $50m (£36.4m) towards building the online world.
Critics have accused Facebook of using the announcement as a deflection tactic, following a slew of bad press over the last few weeks.
Frances Haugen, a former product manager at Facebook, will appear in Parliament on October 25th before the Online Safety Bill committee.
She will give evidence on what she claims are the harmful effects the company’s social media platforms have on their users and society at large, and how the company is not taking action to prevent these.
Regardless, the announcement of a huge hiring spree shows Facebook is undeterred in pushing on with its ambitious in the creation of its Metaverse.

The new jobs being created over the next five years will include “highly specialised engineers”.
Investing in the EU offers many advantages, including access to a large consumer market, first-class universities and high-quality talent, Facebook said.

“Europe is hugely important to Facebook. From the thousands of employees in the EU to the millions of businesses using our apps and tools every day, Europe is a big part of our success, as Facebook is invested in the success of European companies and the wider economy.
“This is an exciting time for European tech. The EU has a number of advantages that make it a great place for tech companies to invest – a large consumer market, first-class universities and, crucially, top-quality talent.”
