Dundee Data Hack will Connect Citizens with Public Data

DATA FEST

This month Dundee will be hosting a Public Data Hack as part of DataFest18. It will be one of the 40 Fringe events taking place across the country.

Dundee is going to take part in DataFest18 Fringe Events with a hackathon aimed at making better use of public data. Wittin, Abertay University and Dundee Council are collaborating to bring together data scientists, games developers and ethical hackers to brainstorm ideas that would benefit the running of Dundee Council.

The hackathon, which is one of 40 plus events being held across Scotland, will be the first event of its kind to be hosted in Dundee and is a great opportunity for Dundee Council to explore data in collaboration with innovative thinkers to develop ideas that would bring benefits to the city.

The Data Lab CEO, Gillian Docherty said, “It’s brilliant to be able to extend the DataFest reach to Dundee, allowing us to promote the benefits of data-driven problem solving further than ever before. The sheer number of events taking place showcases Scotland’s place as a burgeoning centre for data on a global scale.”

“DataFest18 is all about collaboration. We believe that interaction between different industry sectors and disciplines, academics, data practitioners, students, public sector, and business specialists is a key element towards data driven innovation.”

Matthew Davis from Wittin said, “We’re going to get an exclusive look at some of Dundee’s public data, and we’ll get a crack at understanding and perhaps solving a few problems to boot.”

The challenge

Participants will be asked to focus on projects that look specifically at Smart City Data and improvements in sharing and understanding, which can range from games and visualizations to infographics and storytelling.

Teams, of up to five members, will be formed on the weekend to hack together a project to be presented to the rest of the hackathon for prizes voted on by members of Wittin, Abertay University and Dundee City Council.

Ruth Falconer from Abertay University said, “We are looking forward to hosting this event and seeing what ideas emerge.”

When and where

The Dundee Public Data Hack will be held from 17 March 2018 at 9:00 to 18 March 2018 17:00, at Whitespace in the Abertay University.
