The group will work with industry leaders and bring together top global EnergyTech investors, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and government leaders at a Barclays Eagle Labs virtual launch event.
Taking place on the 29th of September, the event will bring together the community to start “strengthening the ecosystem by introducing startup culture and learning from other industry sectors.”
A global panel of speakers will be featured at the event, including:
- Sir Ian Wood KT GBE, Wood Group founder and Chair of Opportunity North East (ONE).
- Horace Dediu, Asymco.com founder and celebrated tech analyst.
- Siobhan Clarke, BP Launchpad operating partner.
- Sarah Moore, Peterson Executive Director and tech founder.
- Bill Nuttall, The Open University’s Professor of Energy.
Sir Wood commented: “We are pleased to be partnering with Barclays Eagle Labs and CodeBase to bring together major players in the energy industry alongside businesses that can challenge and disrupt the mindset and culture to catalyse a more digitally focused energy sector.
“The partnership highlights the critical role the North East of Scotland will play to deliver new energy solutions and investments that address the changing global energy demand and climate change challenge.”
Ben Davey, CEO of Barclays Ventures, said: “Innovation and digitalisation of the energy sector will be key in meeting our energy needs in the future.
“That’s why we’re excited to work with our partners Opportunity North East and CodeBase to bring together tech startups with larger energy sector businesses, helping to strengthen the EnergyTech ecosystem and accelerate its digital transformation.”

The aim of the EnergyTech initiative is to address the different types of innovation (disruptive, sustaining and diversification) that are key to transforming the sector, spread best practice from other sectors and educate on a range of topics from Lean Startup to VC/CVC risk-thinking.
As well as this, participants will be supported in building new, sustainable value propositions, with expertise being shared by industry partners.
Steven Drost, Chief Strategy Officer, CodeBase said: “The energy space is evolving at pace. New technologies, climate change and societal demands are shaping how we create, package and price energy and digital is very much part of this mix.
“As US entrepreneur and investor Marc Andreessen famously put it almost a decade ago, ‘software is eating the world’ and in 2020 this very much includes the Energy sector.”
Barclays Eagle Labs, ONE and CodeBase have worked in partnership on a series of initiatives in recent years, with Barclays Eagle Labs launched at CodeBase in Scotland in January 2018 and ONE CodeBase launched in Aberdeen in May 2018.
Jared Owen, Director of Digital and Entrepreneurship, Opportunity North East (ONE) added: “Although virtual initially, the ONE Tech Hub in Aberdeen will be the home of EnergyTech in the region, placing it and its network at the heart of the UK’s energy industry transition.
“Importantly, we can now sense the enthusiasm of both the energy and digital sectors to tackle industry challenges through a new lens.”
